Principal + Founder

Since 2014, Melanie Murata has worked with fortune 500 companies and independent brands to create immersive environments and compelling destinations.

Melanie has spent the last decade immersed in the architecture and design industry. Her passion for design started at a young age and she went on to graduate with a Master’s Degree in Interior Design. From there, Melanie moved to Southern California to launch her career in commercial interiors with world-renowned architecture firm, Gensler. In her newest venture, Karu, Melanie strives to encapsulate her design experiences so her vision and work process fully serves her clients.

With a well-rounded experience in creative, technical, and business, she offers a unique perspective for her clients. She created Karu as a creative space to design experiences rooted in a humanistic approach.

Her own wellness, intellectual and travel journey has created a foundation for her creative & professional work while remaining authentic to Karu.

Inspired by Heritage

Ka·ru [Adj] /kah’roo/:

Far Away

Melanie spent a part of her childhood in Huancayo, a small village in the Peruvian Andes. Karu is inspired by Melanie’s cultural heritage and Incan ancestry. Karu means far away in Quechua, the native language of the Incas. As a child, Melanie’s great-grandfather often spoke in Quechua.

The brand is a continual journey of understanding the depth of humankind by traveling to far way lands. It is an homage to her heritage and the part of life she treasures, family.
